Every Christmas, In our Early Years program, Educators set up a fireplace area with stockings.
This year for the first time, a child commented on the stockings being filled. The comment was “Will we share the candy?”
This comment led to the following questions “Do stockings always get filled?” “Are they always filled with candy?” “Does your family share the candy?”
Educators respond to enquiries by asking the children and other Educators what they know. This responsive and enquiry based curriculum fosters critical thinking and tolerance of peers beliefs.
One day, a gift appeared in the stocking which led to the following discussion “How did the gift get there?”
“It was Santa”
“It wasn’t Santa because he only comes on Christmas night”
“It was Santa because Santa always fills the stockings”
